Dutch asset management services firm explores blockchain technology

A Dutch asset management services firm that oversees pensions for governments and educators has begun exploring possible blockchain applications.

Earlier this week, APG announced a partnership with Maastricht University and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research to develop blockchain and artificial intelligence technologies. APG is a wholly owned subsidiary of Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP and manages approximately €40 million in total assets on behalf of the foundation.

The company said it is looking into blockchain applications in finance, logistics and medicine.

“The promise of blockchain, artificial intelligence and the impact of climate change will have a huge impact on the future of APG, business and society,” APG CEO Gerard van Olphen said in a statement.

Also contributing, according to APG, was Willem Vermeend, a former government minister and current university professor who was appointed by the Dutch government earlier this year to promote innovation in financial technology.
