Coinbase Wallet Begins Supporting Ethereum Transactions

Coinbase has added support for trading ether, the digital currency on the Ethereum blockchain.

The startup, which has raised $117 million so far, added ether trading pairs to its bitcoin trading service just two months ago, while officially renaming the platform the Global Digital Asset Exchange (GDAX).

Coinbase users can now start trading Ethereum in their Ethereum wallets, including the Buy Widget released in June. All Coinbase Ethereum trading options are open to users, including credit cards and bank transfers, with the same trading restrictions as Bitcoin.

Coinbase published a lengthy blog post discussing the recent controversy surrounding the Ethereum platform.

Topics discussed included the June collapse of The DAO, a project that forced developers in the ethereum community to modify the platform’s code in order to recover the stolen funds.

Coinbase's blog post defended the Ethereum platform, saying that Ethereum is still in the "early experimental" stage and hopes that Ether can expand its uses different from Bitcoin.

"Ethereum is driving the development of the digital currency ecosystem forward, and we are happy to be part of building the world's open financial system."

This assessment is consistent with the perception of Coinbase’s upper management, who have praised Ethereum’s development community and its foresight.
