Europol, the EU’s top law enforcement agency, sets up a digital currency working group

Throughout last year, Europol and Interpol have been working together to study digital currencies, organizing meetings and training courses for representatives of global law enforcement agencies. Just recently, Europol and blockchain startup Chainalysis signed an agreement to expand their ability to track digital currency transactions.

The European Union’s top law enforcement agency, Europol, has co-founded a new working group dedicated to studying digital currencies.

The initiative is jointly led by Interpol, an intergovernmental organization focused on law enforcement, and the Basel Institute on Governance, a non-profit organization focused on financial crime in the private and public sectors.

The working group includes collaborative workshop groups and a global network of subject matter experts, according to a statement released last week.

Europol said in a statement:

“As Internet technology becomes more advanced, criminals are also beginning to use advanced technologies for illegal and illicit activities. Among these technologies, digital currency is already changing the global criminal underground.”
