Open source project Zeppelin launches smart contract framework, compatible with Rootstock to ensure smart contract security

As new questions arise about the viability of blockchain smart contracts, one company has unveiled a solution that aims to make it easier to secure them.

The solution was developed by the Zeppelin project, an open source smart contract solution, which aims to provide a community-driven framework for ensuring code security and auditability. The goal of the project is to prevent accidental loss of funds, a danger best demonstrated by the collapse of The DAO, Ethereum's largest smart contract project.

Given that Ethereum is the most well-known smart contract platform, its first set of smart contract tools were written in its programming language Solidity, but Zeppelin is also currently compatible with Rootstock (a project that may one day bring the same smart contract functionality to Bitcoin) and some private blockchains.

The goal of the project is to create a secure platform that is blockchain-agnostic.

Zeppelin developer Demian Brener said:

“Zeppelin aims to advance the development of decentralized applications, protocols, and organizations by making it easier for developers to create secure smart contracts.”

The platform was created by Demian Brener and Manuel Aráoz, both of whom are no strangers to blockchain development.

The two previously teamed up to build the video platform Streamium, with Aráoz working on creating Proof of Existence, one of the first projects to envision how public blockchains could be used to verify data.

Smart contracts, made popular by Ethereum, are self-executing codes designed to automate tasks and protocols, and in the long run, to reduce manual work.

Zeppelin is particularly interested in using smart contracts to make it easier to conduct business, Brener said. The team envisions one day creating an autonomous organization that would reward users based on their contributions to an open source project.
