The speech by the head of the Hyperledger project, “Umbrella”, became an important dividing line

Rage Comment : The Hyperledger project was founded in 2015, and Executive Director Brian Behlendorf only took office in May this year. However, both the progress of the project and his rich experience and expertise as a manager have shown people the bright future of the project. On this basis, Behlendorf has been committed to the team and ideological construction of the community, and has also drawn a clear project development route for everyone.

Brian Behlendorf, executive director of the Hyperledger project, has added to his expertise by helping others work together better.

But before the open source project comes to fruition, the founder of the Apache Software Foundation wants the 80-plus members who have joined the project to understand what the alliance means.

Last week, his blog post, "Meet Hyperledger: An 'Umbrella,' for Open Source Blockchain & Smart Contract Technologies," clearly outlined the project's mission and planned service offerings.

He said the blog post was not only intended to attract new members, but also to paint a picture of the future of the project.

"It can prove a point to people who are either excited about the prospect or skeptical about it."

The Hyperledger project was founded in December 2015 and is engaged in the construction of enterprise blockchain solutions in the form of an alliance.

The Hyperledger project brings together a group of industry experts, such as the US depository and clearing agency DTCC and the startup Digital Asset Holdings, who put aside their differences and worked together to build a complete ecosystem to help members and customers simplify services and reduce costs.

The blog post describes how the project is "building a common platform" and promoting adoption by reducing "duplicated and redundant" processes.

“Perhaps most importantly, we can directly address a huge challenge seen in the existing open source blockchain space – the huge tribal consciousness within the developer community.”

Under my umbrella

Behlendorf's plan is to create a new way of doing things, one that no longer presents a web of interconnected code bases and companies, but one that sees a high degree of collaboration and inclusive coexistence in groups.

In preparing this blog post, he interviewed some developers and employees of member companies, all of whom have a tendency to unite into small groups and tribes.

Finally, it was concluded that even though many companies within the Hyperledger project are diligently working on the IBM-Fabric project or the Intel-led Sawtooth Lake project, project members still hope to attract new partners.

“Once I started asking questions, I saw a lot of convergence.”

In order to systematically present and manage this convergence, the Hyperledger project elected a new technical steering committee last month to oversee the performance of its members and manage the team’s development path. The team’s earliest work included unifying the three key features of the Hyperledger project.

The blog post states that the committee defines a project as a group of developers responsible for a set of "artifacts" (such as Git code repositories), bug tracking databases and collaborative writing systems, areas within the Hyperledger project that specifically describe how individual projects interact with the community.

Keep it pure and professional

When Behlendorf took over in May, he made it clear that he would work on building the underlying codebase to make it easier to recruit new members. Since then, the number of members has doubled, and now his focus has become to learn from his experience managing competitors at the Apache Foundation.

The Foundation has over 300 “top-level” software projects, each with its own rules, development communities, planning and development processes, using the same collaboration tools, intellectual property frameworks and unique board reporting procedures.

In August, the Hyperledger project added 17 members, including Samsung Data Systems, Quickbooks developer Intuit and heavy machinery manufacturer Sany Heavy Industry (Sany), bringing the number of members to 81. Last month, the Hyperledger project announced its first block browser, with DTCC, IBM and Intel participating in its development.

He outlined a clear path for future collaboration among Hyperledger project members:

"They can choose to merge or find useful differentiation and diversification. It's just that sometimes this information is difficult to understand under the influence of people's competitive consciousness."
