The Water Project received 38 bitcoins in donations The Water Project is a well-known Bitcoin charity project. The local team digs wells, builds dams and protects springs in Kenya, Uganda and Sierra Leone. When BitGive helped them raise funds to dig wells in western Kenya, the charity gained everyone's attention. The well provides clean drinking water to Shisango Girls Junior High School and a community of over 500 people. BitGive also produced a 3-minute video about how their organization helps people differently from other Bitcoin communities. As of September 13, the largest donation the organization had received was 38 bitcoins from an anonymous donor in two transactions overnight. The Water Project thanked the donors on Reddit: "We don't know who you are, but we appreciate you. If you happen to be reading this site, I want to say thank you. Today you made an anonymous donation to provide clean and safe drinking water and sanitation facilities for the entire school. We will monitor the funds to start this project next year." Bitcoin community already supports 5 water projects The Water Project also said that the Bitcoin community has supported five water projects over the past two years, with some donations also being anonymous. The charity is very grateful for the recent donations and thanks everyone for donating, no matter how much. The charity is very much supported by the Bitcoin community, with the goal of “providing clean drinking water for every Bitcoin”. The organization then said that it is possible to view the use of Bitcoin on their Bitcoin donation page, and that they are currently most interested in using donations to build water wells in Sierra Leone, and are working with the BitGive Transparency Project to make the donations received auditable. Bitcoin community shows Bitcoin is a truly humanitarian currency When the Bitcoin community heard about this random donation, they were delighted. Someone wrote on Reddit: 38 bitcoins for charity, no matter who donated it, they are all great people. Bitcoin is often hacked because of greed, and many of the hacked bitcoins are in the hands of philanthropists, not investors. The donation of 38 bitcoins is generous, and no one knows whether the donor will reveal his identity, but it is not important to the Bitcoin community and the African clean water charity project. Anonymous donations like this are one of the important humanitarian forces of Bitcoin. |
