Bcoin: A JavaScript-based Bitcoin library alternative to Core

“We just want to make Bitcoin great again,” Purse said in its latest announcement. “Bcoin is a solution that helps us manage Bitcoin wallet infrastructure without posing a threat to the Bitcoin network.”

Bcoin will help build Bitcoin infrastructure

The first cryptocurrency project launched by Purse.io was a Bitcoin discount consumer application for Amazon. To do this, Purse built its own infrastructure.

The main problem was finding a way to manage the wallet infrastructure. The startup admitted that its work on the Core software was inefficient because of the client code base.

To address this, the company launched Bcoin, a Javascript Bitcoin library designed to simplify Bitcoin coding.

The company said its new JavaScript Bitcoin library is not intended to oppose Satoshi Nakamoto’s ideas. Instead, Purse believes Bcoin is an important application for the future of Bitcoin and provides the necessary infrastructure.

Allow new applications

Purse described what Bcoin wants to achieve: “It can speed up protocol development, solve some scalability issues by implementing the Lightning Network, and enable cool features like smart contracts.”

To achieve this goal, the company also recruited former BitPay employee Christopher Jeffrey.

“Bcoin is the easiest-to-use Bitcoin library to date,” the company said. “It supports Segwit, Lightning, and Schnorr signatures, as well as other popular new BIPs.”

The company said Bcoin offers the following technical features:

  1. Blockchain verification;

  2. SPV mode;

  3. Can run natively in browsers and apps;

  4. A wallet system and wallet database;

  5. Memory Pool (MEMPool)/Miners;

  6. Other APIs;

  7. Supports isolated verification, lightning network, version bits, CSV, BIP70, BIP151, BIP152, BIP150 and MAST;

  8. Open Source

It is reported that Bcoin is an open source project under the MIT license. In the next few weeks, Purse will integrate Bcoin into its backend.

“This is an alternative infrastructure to Bitcoin Core that has features that Bitcoin Core doesn’t have,” Purse’s chief technology officer told reporters.
