Blockchain technology startup Chain has launched a free and open-source version of its distributed ledger platform that enables organizations to issue and transfer assets on permissioned blockchain networks.

The company said this is the first time developers can launch or join a blockchain network, create financial applications, and access in-depth technical documentation and tutorials by downloading and installing Chain Core.

The company said users can choose to test their prototypes on a test network, or “testnet,” which is jointly run by Chain, Microsoft and the Initiative for Cryptocurrencies and Contracts (IC3), a collaborative effort between Cornell University, Cornell Tech, UC Berkeley and UC Berkeley, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Institute of Technology.

Chain Core Developer Edition is the product of a multi-year effort between Chain and leading financial institutions to build a blockchain architecture that reflects financial industry use cases.

Chain Core Enterprise Edition is the company's production platform and is already being used by market leaders to launch innovative products in the payments, banking, capital markets and insurance markets.
