Liberal Free Republic Liberland, also known as the Free Republic of Liber (Czech: Svobodná republika Liberland), was founded on April 13, 2015 by Czech Liberal Citizens Party member and activist Vit Jedlicka on a disputed piece of land between Croatia and Serbia on the west bank of the Danube. Lieberland is a direct democratic presidential system. It uses Bitcoin as currency. It has no compulsory tax system and no gun control . The official website is liberland.org, which contains the country's constitution and forms for applying for citizenship. Currently, President Jedlicka has signed and approved citizenship applications from about 500,000 people submitted online, and has issued passports. It has also set up 75 offices around the world. Lieberland raises funds mainly through crowdfunding and accepting donations from wealthy liberals, and plans to make a 14° malt beer its main export in the future. Lieber's disputed land Lieber has not yet been recognized by any member state of the United Nations. If it is recognized internationally in the future, it will become the third smallest sovereign state in the world, second only to the Vatican and Monaco. Lieber is about 7 square kilometers, most of which is covered by forests. There are currently no residents. In April 2015, a reporter from Parlamentní Listy went there for an interview and found that there was only one abandoned house for 30 years and the road was in a very bad condition. The Croatian government does not want this territory, but at the same time, no one is allowed to enter, otherwise they will be fined or arrested. President Jedlicka said in an interview with Fox News that this is a good thing because the Croatian government has guards at the border between Croatia and Liber. He believes that this is equivalent to recognizing that Liber does not belong to Croatia, so he can claim sovereignty over this land; and no one can come in and grab this land from him. Due to the border guards, no one is allowed to enter Liber. Currently, all meetings and diplomatic activities in Liber are held on a yacht on the Danube. Choose Bitcoin as the currency In the spirit of liberalism, Jedlicka hopes to reduce government regulation of Lieber as much as possible, so he chose Bitcoin as the currency in circulation, so that there is no need for a central bank to regulate . In an interview with Cointelegraph , he said that Lieber will become the first country to transparently disclose its books on the blockchain , saying that Bitcoin is the future of international trade, and Bitcoin is also easy to exchange and use in neighboring Serbia and Croatia. At present, all of Lieber’s state-owned ships are purchased with Bitcoin. In an interview with Bitcoin.com, he said that he would launch a mobile app in the future to enable residents of the country to easily use Bitcoin for business activities . Finance Minister Jan Purkrabek said on Facebook, " After careful consideration, in order to ensure the transparency of Liber, we have decided to build the country's financial system entirely on cryptocurrency. No government-issued legal tender is needed, only transparent Bitcoin and Bitcoin-based credit cards are accepted ." |
