Bitcoin Core developers consider 2 MB hard fork proposal, precondition that Segregated Witness is activated

In the past few years, solving the Bitcoin expansion problem has been the top priority for developers. So far, developers have proposed multiple solutions, but in fact, only two solutions are currently in a state of "competition". According to Bitcoin Core developer luke-jr, Core has also considered a 2MB hard fork expansion, but the prerequisite is that the segregated witness can be activated.

Luke-jr wrote in a post on r/Bitcoin:

“Some core developers agree that a 2 MB hard fork (without wallet changes) is a good idea, and we’ve made some progress over the past year, with an incomplete version of the solution currently running on testnet.”

But he later commented:

“Please note the context of this comment, I am stating that we have seriously considered hard forks and even proposed them. I am not saying that some of us are working on coding a hard fork proposal to replace Segwit (no, it requires Segwit to be activated), nor am I saying that the hard fork proposal will be deployed on the network (that is up to the community, and it seems likely that the community will reject all recent hard fork proposals.)”

In other words, the current core developers mean that the 2 MB hard fork expansion will only be considered after the segregated witness is activated, but this is inconsistent with the content of the Hong Kong expansion consensus. According to the content of the Hong Kong expansion consensus, miners will only run the segregated witness in the production environment after Bitcoin Core releases a version containing the hard fork code.

The current question is whether the core developers will choose to back off, or whether the miners will choose to trust the core developers?

If the core developers choose to back off, they will have to propose a 2 MB hard fork expansion before considering activating witnesses.

If miners trust the core developers, they need to activate the isolated witness first, and then wait for the core developers to deploy the 2 MB hard fork expansion.

It is important to note that this new proposal is far from complete and requires some polishing.

Larger blocks are a valid option for Bitcoin scaling, and increasing to 2MB blocks would be a good start.

In addition, there is no conflict between this new solution and Segregated Witness, and the two can complement each other.

Many people are watching the block size debate closely, and they all have different reasons. A scalable global currency may not propel its price to new all-time highs, but it may give it a small boost.
