PayPal co-founder, Facebook board member, BitPay investor, Trump supporter, Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel is reportedly considering a run for governor of California in 2018.

Three Republicans familiar with Thiel's thinking reportedly said he was "discussing the prospect of running for governor with people in his inner circle, including his political adviser Rob Morrow."

Despite California's liberal leanings, Thiel's well-recognized name, goodwill in the business community and futuristic ideas about technology, medicine and government will undoubtedly benefit his campaign, as Silicon Valley and the liberal movement, driven largely by millennials, want to move toward a more progressive world through scientific and technological innovation.

Among the world's seven largest fintech companies, California is currently considered to have the worst government management environment. If Thiel really runs for election and wins, California may be more friendly to Bitcoin, blockchain and fintech startups, and even attract more investment and talent. Thiel was appointed as a member of Trump's transition team, which gives him a certain influence in the new government team.

It is not clear whether Thiel will be appointed to other positions. Balaji Srinivasan, CEO of bitcoin startup 21 Inc, may be appointed as the head of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and it is widely speculated that Thiel pushed for this because both of them are very concerned about the development of medicine. Thiel once said in an interview with the New York Times: "We should be more experimental in medical measures."
