Blockchain.info, the world's most popular non-custodial Bitcoin wallet platform, has attracted nearly 11 million wallets. At present, the platform has officially stated its attitude towards the Segregated Verification (Segwit) solution proposed by the Bitcoin Core development team, switching from "planned" to "Segwit ready". Major bitcoin exchanges and mining pools including Bitfinex and Bitfury have switched to the new client, which supports isolated verification as a solution for expansion and transaction scalability. At the same time, this solution helps the deployment of second-layer protocols such as Lightning Network and TumbleBit. Although hardware wallet vendors and developers such as LedgerWallet, Trezor and Keepkey have announced support for segwit, some relatively well-known wallet service providers and platforms have not yet provided full technical support for segwit. Breadwallet and Electrum, two popular Bitcoin wallet platforms, are still in the "Work in Progress" (WIP) state. The developers of these two wallets are allocating resources and hope to adopt SegWit as soon as possible. Currently, many key players and industry leaders are planning to support Segregated Verification. Most notably, Coinbase has announced support for Segregated Verification, which is in the “planning” state, but has not officially switched to the new client. In the past few weeks, Litecoin (LTC) founder and Coinbase engineering director Charlie Lee and Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong have publicly expressed their support for Segwit. Litecoin is currently planning to activate Segwit, and real-time progress can be checked on websites such as Litecoinblockhalf.com. Babbitt has also reported on Armstrong’s support for SegVerification. As early as early January, Armstrong called on the community to “unite and move forward together as an industry. Activating SegVerification can help us get a lot of new features” and said that SegVerification “may be the best development path that Bitcoin can choose at present.” Coinbase and Blockchain are important in supporting Segwit. They were both participants in the 2017 Satoshi Roundtable, which was held recently at a private residence in Mexico. The meeting mentioned that although most industry leaders, developers, miners, and analysts support the activation of Segwit, a small number of participants still prefer a hard fork. Jameson Lopp, an engineer at BitGo, said that this small group of participants are corporate members and representatives of large Bitcoin companies. Now that Blockchain has officially switched to the SegVerification client and Coinbase is also interested in providing technical support for SegVerification, it can be said that the remaining corporate members have begun to believe that SegVerification is the best and most effective solution for Bitcoin expansion. Segregated verification brings at least 2.1 times the block size, which is enough for new users in the future. However, some corporate members are interested in the deployment of the Lightning Network and Tumblebit protocols. These two protocols can make micropayments a reality while also improving user privacy. |
