UASF solution may be successful but it requires support from a large number of Bitcoin miners

Golden Finance News - There are many different discussions and suggestions on Bitcoin expansion. In addition to Segregated Witness (Segwit) and Bitcoin Unlimited (BU), which may lead to a hard fork of Bitcoin, various compromise plans have emerged, such as Segwit2MB and UASF.

The implementation of UASF also requires the support of a large number of Bitcoin miners. Image source: Golden Finance

Recently, attention to UASF has been increasing because this scheme chooses a method other than full node voting to promote the implementation of segregated witness, which is deeply loved by segregated witness supporters.

UASF, or User Activated Soft Fork, is a Bitcoin soft fork proposal that calls for all Bitcoin nodes to activate Segregated Witness at a specific time, provided that before that time, the Segregated Witness and Bitcoin Unlimited voted by all nodes have not yet been decided.

UASF proposed that in order to prevent the congestion of the Bitcoin network from continuing to affect normal Bitcoin transactions and to allow the increase in Bitcoin transaction fees to "calm down" for a while, it is best to enforce the Bitcoin expansion plan at a time that everyone can accept.

As for why Segregated Witness is enforced instead of Bitcoin Unlimited, it may be related to the support of the initiators. However, from a practical point of view, Segregated Witness has an "orthodox" origin and has not had a negative impact on the security and stability of the Bitcoin network, so it is the best choice for enforcement.

It is reported that there are more and more supporters of UASF now, including two Bitcoin mining pools, Bitfury and Bitcoin India, which have publicly expressed their support for UASF. However, UASF also clearly understands that if it does not gain the recognition of more Bitcoin nodes, the idea of enforcing the isolation witness upon expiration will only be a fantasy.

UASF states on its website,

“It is important to understand that UASF (BIP148) is a soft fork that requires miners to activate the existing Segregated Witness deployment. However, this process is not mandatory for UASF. Because normal nodes can execute UASF on the last day, which is before August 1, 2017.

Before or on execution day, Bitcoin miners can:

- Update its node software to the mandatory version of BIP148;

——Or run BIP148 border nodes to filter out invalid Bitcoin blocks, update their existing Bitcoin mining software, and then mine blocks with the BIP148 logo to activate Segregated Witness. ”
