Foreign media reports: Bitcoin miners at the New York Consensus Conference agreed to activate SegWit before September

Bitcoin’s run towards $2,200 is not only exciting investors, but it could also lead to the activation of Segregated Witness (SegWit) on the Bitcoin network by September 2017.

New York, May 21, 2017 - According to miner sources, Bitcoin miners have reached a SegWit agreement. This marks a good start for this important consensus meeting, uniting important promoters and stakeholders in the Bitcoin industry.

Charlie Shrem said in a chat message on the Walepoolbtc Telegram channel that “big news” came out of the New York Consensus conference and it was time to “buy Bitcoin.”

Shrem wrote:

"I'll let you know when I have all the details, but it's all still a work in progress."

He also added that he was “optimistic” and confirmed that the news was about SegWit.

Miner source: SegWit will start in September

Shrem’s optimism comes as a number of bitcoin businesses, along with at least Bitmain CEO Jihan Wu and Digital Currency Group CEO Barry Silbert, have reportedly agreed to implement SegWit in “September 2017.”

According to entrepreneur Alistair Milne, a meeting organized by Silbert at the Consensus conference resulted in “how to end the (current) scaling debate.”

“I don’t have inside information, but I think what happened at Consensus today ends the (current) Bitcoin scaling debate. — Alistair Milne (@alistairmilne) May 22, 2017”

SegWit is just a matter of weeks

Cointelegraph was also able to reveal that a source from the mining community who wished to remain anonymous believes that SegWit activation will be completed before September.

Milne also stated that participants in the meeting “agreed to run a fork of Core [...] which will enable SegWit to activate as quickly as possible.

“After SegWit is activated, a hard fork will be performed within 12 months to increase the block size to 2MB.”

He added:

"The Core and other implementations can then choose whether to change to maintain compatibility."

Although no one has yet to issue an official confirmation, the possible plan has already begun to receive criticism, specifically from Core developer Luke-jr.

Luke-jr responded to the news via Twitter:

“What happens when they realize the [incompatible] ‘SegWit’ part of their plan is going to take them longer than 12 months to fix?”

“So, they signed off on a proposal that is technically unworkable. — Samson Mow (@Excellion) May 22, 2017”

Blockstream’s Samson Mow also appears to be getting answers from Luke-jr, having previously confirmed that SegWit’s implementation date is September of this year.
