Uber's support for Bitcoin is expected to come true, and the newly elected CEO is a Bitcoin enthusiast

Uber's support for Bitcoin is expected to come true, and the newly elected CEO is a Bitcoin enthusiast

According to reports, the board of directors of the giant company Uber recently voted to select the company's new CEO candidate - Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. It is worth noting that under Khosrowshahi's leadership, Expedia accepted Bitcoin payments very early, and he himself is also an investor in Bitcoin startup 21 Inc.

Bloomberg reported:

"Uber to name Expedia's Dara Khosrowshahi as CEO of giant company."

It is reported that Khosrowshahi has served as CEO of Expedia since August 2005, helping the company expand its business to more than 60 countries around the world. Under his leadership, Expedia has grown into the world's largest online travel company. According to the Associated Press and Equilar, in 2015, the CEO who graduated from Brown University became the highest-paid CEO in the S&P 500 Index, with a total salary of US$94.6 million that year.

In March 2015, he personally participated in 21 Inc's $116 million Series B financing. In addition, according to his Linkedin profile, Khosrowshahi is also a member of the Professional Bitcoin P2P Digital Currency Group.

If Khosrowshahi accepts Uber's offer, he will replace Uber founder Travis Kalanick (whom the board has ousted) as Uber's new CEO. As of press time, Khosrowshahi has not accepted the offer.

Expedia and Bitcoin

Expedia, which Khosrowshahi led, began accepting bitcoin payments on June 11, 2014, but the option was only available for hotel bookings, and remains the same today. For flight bookings, the only payment methods Expedia currently supports are debit/credit cards and Masterpass.

It is reported that Expedia indirectly accepts Bitcoin through Coinbase. Customers' Bitcoin payments are converted into US dollars through Coinbase's instant transaction processing, so Expedia does not actually hold Bitcoin.

Uber and Bitcoin

Although Uber does not currently support Bitcoin payments, some Uber drivers have been independently exploring this option.

In July 2016, Uber drivers in Argentina began using the Bitcoin wallet Xapo to circumvent political obstacles from the Argentine government. The Argentine government's practice of stopping Uber from using credit cards did not affect Xapo's debit cards because these cards use Bitcoin.

Do you think that if Dara Khosrowshahi accepts Uber’s invitation, the giant will soon accept Bitcoin payments? Feel free to share your thoughts.
