According to the Ethereum white paper, Ethereum's complete development route is divided into four stages: Frontier, Homestead, Metropolis, and Serenity.

"Metropolis" is the third of four phases of Ethereum's development, implemented in two steps: " Byzantium" and " Constantinople " .

The "Byzantium" that was successfully implemented today has introduced a large number of new features, including: zk-SNARKs, "revert" function and "returndata", abstract accounts.
