First came Bitcoin, then Bitcoin forked into Bitcoin Cash — and now Bitcoin Gold.
After some developers forked the blockchain digital ledger that houses bitcoin, a new version of the cryptocurrency has been formed, dubbed bitcoin gold. The fork comes less than three months after bitcoin cash was created.

Bitcoin's appeal is its independence from any central authority, but that also makes it more vulnerable to so-called "hard forks" as there are different visions in the cryptocurrency community. In addition to Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin miners and developers have recently been embroiled in a debate over an upgrade to its protocol that is designed to speed up Bitcoin transactions. The threat of a lack of consensus could see Bitcoin split again next month.
Robert Khune, a strategist at the Bitcoin Gold Project, said: "This will be what is needed to give the general public access to fair mining again. A successful fork will prove that Bitcoin is always capable of getting rid of any potential manufacturer of abusive mining hardware." He charged that the Bitcoin fork this year was "unnecessarily delayed."
As groups supporting different digital networks and related currency groups compete for dominance, some may try to undermine Bitcoin Gold's efforts, according to Bloomberg. The official Bitcoin Gold website was shut down on Tuesday as hackers tried to block users from accessing it, an attack known as a denial of service attack. Bitcoin Gold developers said on Twitter that the site was receiving 10 million requests per minute and that they were working with vendors to block the attackers.
At 11:26 a.m. New York time on Tuesday (October 24), the price of Bitcoin fell 4.4% to $5,653, a drop of 5.9%. However, the price of cryptocurrencies has still risen by 36% this month and has increased sixfold this year.
