More than 200 victims continue to suffer from a new ransomware attack in Europe and elsewhere, demanding Bitcoin to release encrypted files. Dubbed "Bad Rabbit," the ransomware demands a ransom of 0.05 BTC ($290) to unlock infected computers. The ransomware attacks in Türkiye and Germany were also carried out in Russia and Ukraine, according to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab. "When the target visits a legitimate website, the computer downloads a malicious piece of malware," the ransomware report released Tuesday explains. “No exploit was used, so the victim had to manually execute the malware drop, which was pretending to be an Adobe Flash installer. We detected a number of compromised websites, all of which were news or media sites.” As of Thursday, it was clear that these targets were not in the news and media sphere, with payment systems also failing at Odessa Airport and the Kiev Metro. Bad Rabbit is the latest cyberattack in Russia and Ukraine, where WannaCry and NotPetya have both left their mark in the past six months. The ransom demands from the Bad Rabbit hackers were similar to those from WannaCry, around $300 per machine. Unlike NotPetya, however, there appears to have been no attempt to wipe victims’ data, regardless of whether or not they sent the requisite Bitcoins. |
