He used his administrator privileges to modify the application in the company's computer and stole 100 bitcoins from the company. He was arrested by the police before he could sell the stolen money. Recently, the Haidian police in Beijing cracked a case of sabotaging computer information systems. According to the Legal Evening News and Kanfa News reporter, at about 18:00 on the evening of September 25, 2017, the police from the Xisanqi Police Station of the Haidian Branch received a report from a technology company in the area, saying that the company's computer information system had been destroyed and 100 bitcoins worth millions of RMB had been stolen. After receiving the report, the police from the police station and the branch's network security brigade rushed to the scene to conduct an investigation. According to the company, they found that the company's computer information system had been hacked from a remote location, and the 100 bitcoins obtained through "mining" had disappeared. The police then began to investigate the clues of the intrusion into the company's system. After technical investigation, the police found that although the suspect remotely hacked into the company's account, he used the company's password to get through the system's primary protection, which shows that the suspect must be a thief in the company. After investigation, the police finally determined that the company's administrator Zhong was a major suspect. The Legal Evening News reporter learned that in the early morning of January 2, 2018, the police summoned Zhong to the police station. After interrogation, the suspect Zhong confessed that he was an administrator of the company, and he came into contact with Bitcoin at work. He knew that Bitcoin was traded abroad and was very valuable, so he wanted to make more money. After using the administrator's rights to enter the company's database, he used the technology he learned to crack the password of the company's Bitcoin storage account and stole 100 Bitcoins from the company. After stealing the bitcoins, he wanted to transfer them to a foreign website to sell them. But he didn't know which website could do that, so he went online to search for an application called "Bitcoin wallet" and accidentally found it. He deposited the 100 bitcoins he had stolen into it. He heard that there was a more core "wallet" that could clear the traces of the theft, so he moved 10 bitcoins to the "core wallet". But before he sold the bitcoins, he found that the 10 bitcoins he had deposited were gone. Later, with the help of the police, the suspect Zhong confessed that he had returned the remaining 90 bitcoins to the company, but the 10 bitcoins deposited in the "core wallet" could not be recovered. At present, the suspect Zhong has been criminally detained by Haidian police on suspicion of destroying computer information systems, and the case is under further trial. Haidian police remind: Companies should conduct regular computer security checks, update computer operating system patches in a timely manner, install necessary anti-virus protection software, and change passwords regularly to prevent criminals from taking advantage of their position to commit illegal acts. |
