Sony cancels PS3 "mining" loophole and is sued, miners are awarded $3.75 million

Mining has been booming in recent years, and almost all electronic devices with computing power have not been able to escape the clutches of miners. Sony's previous generation game console, the PS3, is no exception, as miners have found a mining loophole.

In response, Sony directly chose to cancel the related functions of the vulnerability. As a result, it was sued by miners and paid $3.75 million to settle the matter.

If you bought an original PlayStation 3 (the Fat model before the PS3 Slim was released) in the US between November 1, 2006 and April 1, 2010, I have some good news for you.

Sony recently agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit related to the company's removal of the "Other OS" feature from the PS3, so anyone who bought a qualifying device during that four-year period could receive $65 (RMB 411) in compensation.

When Sony first launched the PS3, it began to consider the new PS as more than just a gaming console, offering the ability to install and run Linux, a feature that excited a small number of nerds and the then-nascent cryptocurrency miners.

But Sony soon realized that this feature could pose a significant security risk, and because this feature was not so popular, Sony decided to cancel the "Other OS" feature instead of fixing the security vulnerability.

Sony paid a heavy price for this decision, and the company recently agreed to settle the class-action lawsuit for $3.75 million (RMB 23.75 million).

Anyone who bought a PS3 during that time and used the Other OS feature is eligible to apply for compensation of up to $65 (RMB 411). If the number of people compensated exceeds 25,000, the compensation received by each person will be reduced.

The claim requires you to provide the following:

1. Between November 1, 2006 and April 1, 2010, you purchased a Fat model PS3 in the United States.

2. The PS3 was purchased from an authorized retailer and not through other channels.

3. The PS3 is still in your hands, or you can provide the PS online network ID you used during that time period.

4. And be willing to provide evidence that you use or intend to use Other OS features.

If this describes you, go to the claims page for details on how to submit a claim, and please note that the deadline to submit a claim is April 15th.
