As the mining market continues to remain high, miners have also purchased large quantities of graphics cards or professional mining machines, and a large number of manufacturers have launched new products specifically for mining to get a piece of the pie. Now, Intel is also going to take action. A patent recently published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) shows that Intel designed a Bitcoin mining hardware accelerator as early as September 2016. The accelerator is integrated into the CPU processor, has been specially optimized for information summary and information scheduling data channels, and can work in conjunction with ASIC, SoC, CPU, FGPA and other hardware. Intel did not emphasize how high the mining performance of the accelerator is, but instead focused on energy efficiency, because current mining hardware and software are forced to repeatedly execute SHA-256 calculations endlessly, which is very power-consuming and requires a large amount of hardware space. Intel claims that its mining accelerator is significantly smaller and extremely energy-efficient, reducing energy consumption by up to 35% compared to general-purpose processors. This is undoubtedly a good thing, considering that mining not only impacts the normal market, but also causes huge waste of energy. Data shows that the electricity consumed by Bitcoin and Ethereum mining has exceeded that of small countries such as Kuwait, Algeria, Greece, Jordan, Iceland, and Libya, ranking 71st among all countries and regions in the world. The electricity consumption to complete a Bitcoin transaction can be used by a mainstream American household for 5.5 days. Since the patent has been submitted for a year and a half and is now public, it looks like Intel’s mining machine will be available soon. |
