[Mining Network Review] Bitmain Antminer S9 Hydro Water-Cooled Miner

ASIC mining machines need to fully calculate mining, and the mining machines themselves generate a lot of heat. Traditional mining machines are equipped with powerful fans to enhance heat dissipation. The temperature drops, but the noise is also higher. Some miners with strong hands-on ability have modified their mining machines to water-cooled heat dissipation. Water-cooled heat dissipation has a water inlet and outlet, and there are multiple water channels inside the radiator. This can give full play to the advantages of water cooling, can take away more heat, reduce fans and also reduce noise. However, the modification of water-cooled mining machines is very complicated, and it is OK to modify it yourself for fun. So are there any ready-made water-cooled mining machines?

Recently, Bitmain launched a professional water-cooled mining machine, the Antminer S9 Hydro. Now, we will personally review this mining machine for you.

  Mining machine parameters:

The Antminer S9 Hydro official website only sells bare metal units. If you mine at home, you will also need to purchase water cooling accessories, such as an APW5 power supply (2600W) and a mining machine water drain assembly.

If you use an existing power supply for the mining machine, please pay attention to the power output power. The power consumption of the whole mining machine is about 1800W.

There is an air outlet fan on the front of the mining machine. Although it is a water-cooled mining machine, a low-speed fan is added for better effect, but it is basically noiseless.

The front looks the same as other mining machines and you can’t tell what kind of mining machine it is.

The water drain and the mining machine are connected by hoses, 4 hoses

Water injection:

Cooling water is injected into the water drain. In order to ensure long-term and reliable operation of water cooling, certain water quality requirements are imposed.

It is recommended to use distilled water or purified water.

Unscrew the screws on the water cooling container and then you can fill water into the water pump. Please pay attention to the water level when filling.

After running for a period of time, the water level drops and needs to be replenished in time

Power connection:

There are 4 hash boards, and the 3 PCIE interfaces of each hash board need to be connected to a power supply. It is recommended to use an independent power supply to power the entire machine. The 4 hash boards with non-independent power supply can be connected to different power supplies respectively, but the 3 PCIE interfaces of each hash board must be connected to the same power supply, and ensure that the hash board is powered on last.

Water drainage pump, fan power connection:

There are 6 white 4PIN power interfaces and one black 4PIN interface on the mining machine control board. One of them is connected to the mining machine air outlet fan. The remaining 5 white interfaces are connected to the water exhaust fan, and 1 black interface is connected to the water drainage pump.

Connect the power supply to a power meter. Since the power of the whole machine is relatively large, reaching about 1800W, please choose a high-quality 10A socket strip (do not plug other electrical appliances) or a 16A socket strip.

After connecting the water drain and power supply, plug in the socket to supply power. After power is supplied, the water pump will pump out the water. At this time, the water in the water injector will decrease. At this time, cut off the power and continue to add water. Repeat several times until the water cooling can circulate normally.

Mining test

After the water and drainage connections are all OK, start configuring the mining machine for mining:

Use the router to find the IP address, enter the miner backend to configure the miner, we use the official Antminer pool to mine

Power consumption test

The power consumption of the whole machine (including the mining machine + water drain about 100W) is 1815.9W in total

Noise test

The noise level near the mining machine is 81.1 decibels

Noise test at 5 meters away: 55.6 decibels

Although the mining machine itself does not make much noise, the water pump itself needs to be cooled, and the 6 fans of the water pump also make some noise.

Temperature test

Air outlet temperature test: 40.7℃

Hash board temperature test 43.6℃

Water pipe temperature 40.4℃

Water temperature 53.6℃

Hash power test

The hashrate of the miner tested in Ant Mining Pool is around 18T.

Mining machine disassembly:

The Antminer is an integrated aluminum alloy mining machine. After unscrewing the screws, the computing board can be pulled out directly, which is very convenient.

Summarize:

Antminer water cooling and noise reduction are suitable for individual miners at home. Water cooling can actually make use of the heat dissipated by the heat, such as mining heating interface, mining and greenhouse combination, etc. In this way, the mining income and utilization rate will be greater.
