Zcash Blossom changes mining algorithm to allow ASICs and GPUs to coexist

The Zcash official website community forum stated that Sapling has begun actively working on ecosystem adoption, and we have begun early planning for our next protocol upgrade, codenamed Zcash Blossom.

Blossom is scheduled to be activated one year after Spling, which is around October 28, 2019.

Zcash Blossom plans to change the mining algorithm so that ASICs and GPUs can coexist

Blossom calls this change “Harmony Mining”:

What is it? A dual proof-of-work scheme, where one algorithm is backwards compatible with current mining equipment and the other is designed to work well with GPUs on temporary timescales.

Why is this a goal? By attracting a diverse group of mining users (ASIC and GPU owners), we aim to make the Zcash ecosystem more resilient by spreading issuance and political influence across different types of stakeholders.

Using multi-algorithm mining allows different types of miners to mine at the same time, making the computing power more decentralized and improving the security of the currency.
