Bitmain releases second-generation 7nm chip BM1397 with energy efficiency as low as 30J/T

On February 18, Bitmain, one of the world's top ten and China's second largest fabless chip design companies, and the world's largest cryptocurrency mining company, officially released its second-generation 7nm chip BM1397. It is reported that the chip supports the SHA256 algorithm and can be used for mining encrypted digital currencies such as BTC and BCH, and will be used in the next generation of SHA256 algorithm Antminer new products S17 and T17.

 

Compared with the previous generation 7nm chip BM1391, the second generation BM1397 also uses the world's leading TSMC FinFET technology. The BM1397 single chip integrates more than 1 billion transistors , and has been continuously optimized in terms of circuit structure and low power consumption technology. Official data shows that the energy efficiency ratio of BM1397 is as low as 30J/T, which is about 28.6% energy-saving than the previous generation of products, and the overall performance is more stable.

 

In September 2018 , Bitmain officially released the 7nm mining chip BM1391 and applied it to Antminer S15 and T15, ushering in the era of 7nm low-power mining. Since then, Bitmain has continued to increase its R&D investment and was the first in the industry to launch the second-generation 7nm chip.

 

It is reported that Bitmain's second-generation 7nm chip BM1397 uses deeply customized chip design technology, and global optimization methodology is further applied in chip design. From the front end to the back end, the entire process of BM1397 chip design has been customized. This design scheme achieves the global optimization of the chip by strengthening the real core part while taking into account the optimization of other modules.

 

In order to consolidate and strengthen its competitive advantage, Bitmain has invested a lot of R&D resources in recent years to improve and upgrade chip design. According to data, Bitmain has established a professional engineering R&D team that focuses on research in the fields of chip design, algorithm development, platform architecture, and software and hardware. Currently, Bitmain has successfully mass-produced a number of ASIC chips that support different encrypted digital currency mining and ASIC chips for AI applications. The launch of the second-generation 7nm chip is inseparable from Bitmain's high attention to product R&D iteration.
