On June 10, 2019, major cryptocurrency news site CCN.com announced that it would shut down operations due to a sharp drop in traffic caused by a Google algorithm update. A Google representative responded to questions from Forbes’ Benjamin Pirus via email, explaining that Google’s updates may have different effects on different websites. In an emailed response to Pirus, Google said its goal is to provide more relevant results for people searching the web. It said, "Any update will make some sites perform worse than before and other sites perform better." Google also said it will provide detailed information on Twitter when the latest update is made and will mention some of the sites that may be affected. The founder of CCN said in an interview with Pirus that it was targeted by Google. "Google Core was updated on June 3, 2019, causing CCN's Google search traffic to drop by more than 71% overnight. Data from the SEO analyzer Sistrix shows that our visibility on Google has dropped from 1.2 to less than 0.6." CCN said that its advertising revenue is directly used to develop the team, and Google's update caused its daily revenue to drop by more than 90%. Although some other encrypted media were also affected, the impact was not as serious as CCN. Mike Dudas, founder and CEO of another major blockchain media outlet, The Block, told Pirus that it was only slightly affected by Google’s update.
“The Google Core update had a slight negative impact on our traffic. But The Block’s traffic grew 70% in May compared to April, and we are still seeing more traffic. Fortunately, we are not dependent on SEO (search engine optimization) and receive direct and referral traffic from Twitter and crypto partners, which helps us continue to grow. We also operate a fine-grained management team, and our revenue model does not rely on Google’s advertising traffic. Instead, our main model is our high-quality research and analysis products.”
When asked if there was an impact, John Biggs, news editor at crypto media giant CoinDesk, said, “Not everyone has noticed the impact.” Yuval Gov, co-founder of CryptoPotato, also said that this update by Google caused more difficulties than usual. "Every time Google updates, we see changes, usually positive changes. But this time we were negatively affected, but we soon found that we were not the only crypto site affected." (Bitpush) |
