The essence of Filecoin miners: serving the entire network

In the entire Filecoin ecosystem, miners are an important part, whether they are storage miners or retrieval miners. In addition to receiving token rewards during mining, the more important significance of miners is to serve the entire network.

In the Filecoin network, miners have to do three things:


  • Storage: Miners need to pledge FIL, quote, and grab orders. After obtaining the task, they download the file to their local disk. After completion, they need to submit the copy proof and time-space proof to the system to prove that they have completed a complete storage link. After completing the staged storage, they can get the corresponding handling fee, that is, FIL.

  • Packaging (mining): Block packaging rewards can be understood as subsidies given by Filecoin officials to miners

  • Retrieval: Miners perform hash retrieval on the entire Filecoin chain based on the target file, determine the storage node of the file based on the distributed hash table, and submit it to the client. The corresponding handling fee (also FIL) is obtained by retrieving information (partial fragments of the entire file). The packaging link is mining. In this link, miners actually package the transaction information as well as the storage and retrieval information on the chain, and complete the entire link through block explosion. FIL comes from two channels: ① FIL in the block, which is the most fundamental mining; ② The packaging fee comes from the storage miners.


In the early days of Filecoin, there was not so much data to store, and miners' income mainly came from packaging rewards. Later, as the amount of stored data increased, miners' income gradually shifted from packaging rewards to storage and retrieval income. Therefore, in the end, miners' income mainly comes from storage and retrieval. This means that in order to get more rewards, you must do a good job of storage or retrieval. The more important significance of miners' existence is to serve the entire network.



This is the service provided by miners to their customers.

In addition, let’s go back to the basics - what does a public chain need to be healthy and long-lasting?


  • Incentive mechanism - mining to obtain FIL

  • Competition mechanism - fighting for the right to explode blocks

  • Penalty mechanism - Failure to deduct FIL in time


Filecoin needs a perfect incentive mechanism to allow miners to consciously "work" (i.e. pack and upload to the chain) through "distribution according to work" (whoever discovers a block gets the coin). Only when miners consciously pack and maintain Filecoin can Filecoin grow in an orderly manner.


At the same time, it is also necessary to have a good competitive environment. To be competitive, miners must have high-quality services and fast computing technology, both of which are indispensable. Competition depends on services to make the entire market lively and fair; packaging depends on technology, so that miners will have a sense of crisis, delve into technology, and continue to grow. Miners can continue to learn and accumulate, so as to better maintain the entire ecosystem.



Therefore, during the Filecoin public beta, from the initial dominance of one company to the current flourishing of hundreds of companies, from the perspective of a member of the ecosystem, this should be something to be happy about - this represents that the builders of the Filecoin ecosystem are strong, and the competition is fierce and fair = the more lasting the ecosystem.


Of course, as a distributed storage network, the Filecoin network also needs a punishment mechanism while providing services to customers. This is used to maintain the quality of miners' services, which is an explanation to customers and a maintenance for the ecosystem.


This is the service that miners provide to the ecosystem.


Therefore, as a miner in the Filecoin network, you must first understand that miners = service providers. Only by focusing on service and returning to the original intention of service can you move forward better and build a better Filecoin ecosystem. What do you think?
