Milestone! Bitcoin confirms more than 500 million transactions

At 17:20:48 Beijing time on February 5, the Bitcoin network block height reached 616,064, and the 500 millionth confirmed transaction of Bitcoin was born, which was nearly 11 years away from the first Bitcoin transaction.

According to data from blockchain analysis website Statoshi, the number of transactions currently implemented on the Bitcoin blockchain has exceeded 500 million.

Statoshi co-founder and popular Bitcoin developer Jameson Lopp celebrated the milestone on Twitter, writing:

“Today, as of block 616,064 (00000000000000000001145bf2e7cb7f04df55feaf3b55d9f6511522bbbf333f), the number of transactions confirmed on the Bitcoin blockchain surpassed 500 million.)”

From the First Bitcoin Transaction to Today’s Milestones

Historically, the first Bitcoin transaction took place on January 12, 2009, when Bitcoin's anonymous founder Satoshi Nakamoto and the late cryptographer Hal Finney completed this historic transaction. In this transaction, Satoshi Nakamoto sent 10 BTC to Hal Finney, and then the computer scientist began his own mining work.

Ten months later, on October 5, 2009, the initial exchange rate of Bitcoin to the US dollar was born, with the exchange rate at that time being 1 US dollar for 2300.03 BTC.

The first transaction between Bitcoin and physical objects took place on May 22, 2010, when a programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz completed the famous 10,000 BTC pizza transaction with a young man named Jeremy Sturdivant on the Bitcointalk forum, marking the first commercial transaction of Bitcoin.

After 11 years, Bitcoin has now reached a major milestone, completing 500 million transactions. As Twitter user Hodlonaut said on Twitter:

“Bitcoin isn’t just talk about how revolutionary and unprecedented its censorship-resistant and immutable properties are, it’s what it is. One block at a time.”
