Official Update: Filecoin Discover

Filecoin officially updated the Filecoin Discover project today. Here are three main points you can pay attention to:

• Filecoin Discover is an early pilot program, not a primary source, and the official limit on the number of drives per miner is 20.

• Filecoin Discover cannot be sold or transferred to a third party.

• The official expects to start shipping in mid-June, before which the final crypto-economic parameters will be released and the offline transaction process will be tested.

Filecoin Discover has already attracted a lot of attention from the community. Since May 7, Filecoin miners have signed up to store tens of petabytes of important data.

We’ve been listening to questions and feedback from the Filecoin mining community. This post addresses the most common questions and concerns.

Filecoin Discover is an early pilot program for sponsored storage of valuable datasets on the Filecoin network. While Discover will be an early verified client, it is by no means the only source, nor should it be the primary source of verified data or hard drives used by miners. We also want to ensure that miners are not disadvantaged if they choose not to participate in Discovery.

In response to this feedback, we’ve made some small changes to the Filecoin Discover program.

In the first wave of Filecoin Discover, we will limit the number of drives per miner to 20. After mainnet launch, we will evaluate the expansion program. Please note that Filecoin Discover drives will need to be registered in the launch application, so drives sold or transferred to third parties will not be eligible for verified customer transactions.

For teams with larger order volumes, we still hold your order and will contact you to update your order as needed. If you have questions, you can contact us (at [email protected] or on Slack ).

Finally, we want to make a few small updates to other aspects of the program:

• We expect to begin delivering hard drives in mid-June. Before we begin shipping, we will:

• Waiting for final cryptoeconomic parameters to be released so the team can make an informed choice about storing Discover data.

• Complete testing of offline transaction processes to ensure a smooth launch.

• Prior to shipment, purchasers will be given the opportunity to reconfirm their order and resolve any outstanding payment issues. All orders are cancelable/refundable prior to actual shipment.

• Once the drives are shipped, miners will receive instructions on how to load the drives and prepare for offline transactions.

• There are a lot of questions regarding verified customers and the process of becoming one – would love more details on this!
