Filecoin FAQ

Filecoin FAQ

On May 28, 2020, the Filecoin team hosted our second Filecoin Mining community call; we were joined by over 160 live attendees from around the world.

To kick off the call, Filecoin Ecosystem Director Colin Evran provided an update on the Filecoin project, including an overview of our growing miner ecosystem and some of the important use cases we are seeing emerging. Filecoin Founder Juan Benet followed with a presentation highlighting verified clients in Filecoin. Next, Jonathan Victor spoke at Filecoin Discovery, which encourages early miners of all sizes to store valuable data from nonprofits and open source projects in exchange for additional Filecoin. (Read more about it here here ). We also heard from Ian Darrow, who provided a stimulus package for the testnet - more details coming soon! Finally, Aayush Rajasekaran answers your most frequently asked questions. Check out an overview of the questions and answers below.

Your mining questions answered!

Most questions and answers are quoted directly; some are edited for readability.

Is the backbone network expected to be launched on time?

Yes, you can track our routes on the public trunk route map.

How are you progressing in figuring out how validators and validated clients are going to work?

We are developing a “faucet” for small-scale testing of verified clients. Expect detailed verification procedures and processes to become a verified client as our gate launches. If you are storing real data on Filecoin for a real use case, don’t worry — becoming a verified client will be easy.

When do you expect the final specifications for pledged collateral to be announced?

We are continuing to refine Filecoin’s cryptoeconomic model. Our goal is to release rough parameters in June and final parameters in July.

When will the exam online competition start? Will there be an incentive mechanism?

The competition will begin five weeks before the mainnet launch. Significant Filecoin rewards will be offered. Please note that miners must be ready to store files and service retrieval requests to participate in the rewards program.

How likely is it that Narrow Separation Extender (NSE) will be used in the official network? When will there be a white paper on the NSE algorithm?

Filecoin will launch with robust stacking depth (SDR). Research on narrow stacking expanders (NSE) and other alternatives continues. In general, miners should strongly expect that there will be many proof updates throughout the life of the network, including shortly after launch, to improve efficiency and security.

Do verified client transactions, like those from Filecoin Discoverer or others, contribute to testnet rewards competition?

No.

Is there a fixed reward per tip or per block? Will miners receive a fixed number of blocks, or will the reward be shared among a tip group for that block?

Every block is, and every block wins the same reward, no matter how many blocks are left in the tip.

How many blocks will the average set of tips include?

five.

How can I build a committed capacity sector, do I still need to use it to seal junk data to get power? Or once I build a capacity sector do I get power to mine blocks?

Any sector with no transactions will be considered a committed capacity sector. The overall compensation between the CC sector and the sector storing unverified customer data is no different (note: miners can earn transaction fees without locking in unverified customer transactions).

Hardware Recommendations for Mining Rigs - Any Motherboard and CPU Recommendations, or Guidelines?

We do not provide official recommendations. Here are some community submitted benchmarks: https://filecoin-benchmarks.on.fleek.co/

What is the difference between 32GiB and 64GiB? Are there miners mining 64 GiB blocks?

64 GiB sectors are slightly more efficient to mine and add to the chain, but require better hardware and take longer to unseal. We are seeing some miners mining 64 GiB blocks.

From the current electricity table, the top 3 miners take up most of the stored energy. Is this something you care about?

No, the current testnet is not a race to acquire storage capacity. There is a ton of storage capacity “sitting on the sidelines” right now until we get closer to mainnet launch.

Will the Testnet Phase 2 be reset? If so, when?

Yes, definitely at least once, maybe more. The timing will depend on development and what upgrades are needed.

We look forward to hosting more mining community calls as we gear up for Mainnet launch! In the meantime, stay tuned for updates on the Filecoin blog.
