Filecoin officially releases the Ignite plan and jointly ignites the hackathon with the Ethereum team!

Filecoin Ignite — Learn? Build? Launch

As Filecoin gets closer to the mainnet launch, its ecosystem is developing at an astonishing pace, and Filecoin miners are building small, medium, and large-scale infrastructure. At present, the testnet has just passed 9 PiB tests, and developers are developing applications, dapps, and development tools. Although thousands of people have joined Filecoin, so far, most of them have been fighting alone, and now occasionally get together to discuss.

We are excited to introduce Filecoin Ignite, an event to gather, learn, showcase, and build community together. It is a unique opportunity to dive deep into the technology and share knowledge with other pioneers. It is a place to build amazing things and a stage to show the world the fruits of your efforts. And you can do it at one of several events targeting different audiences.

Currently, we have 6 major events. We have announced one: SpaceRace, which is a global competition for Filecoin miners;

Today, we’re announcing our second: HackFS; a collaboration with one of our favorite teams in web3, the fantastic ETHGlobal team.

For fearless developers and miners, many Ignite events will have significant rewards, and we expect the total prize pool to exceed 4 million FIL and 250,000 USD, distributed across various events.

HackFS — 30-Day Virtual Hackathon

HackFS is a 30-day virtual hackathon designed to lay the foundation for the decentralized web. Developers will build dapps, games, development tools, DeFi integrations, and other tricks that leverage decentralized storage.

HackFS will be hosted by ETHGlobal and Protocol Labs and will have all the hackathon staples: workshops, mentoring, inspiring talks, AMAs, and prizes!

Come learn all about IPFS, Filecoin, Ethereum, libp2p, and more in web3. Join the community, meet other hackers around the world, and play with the core developers of these technologies. You are welcome to attend workshops, learn best practices and get your questions answered; let's brainstorm, prototype, build your project and launch it together.

The ETHGlobal team will support the event’s developers with their specific approach, and the Protocol Labs team will ensure that even developers new to decentralized storage will have a successful outcome by the end of the hackathon: watch all submissions on the live demo day, win prizes, and continue building their own awesome projects.

Many amazing projects and companies started as hackathons, including CryptoKitties, Pinata, Set Protocol, 1inch exchange, InstaDapp, Authereum, and even sharding solutions for blockchains. Many great teams initially met through hackathons. These are great opportunities to learn and try new things, build interesting things, make lasting relationships, and form a team of builders.

ETHGlobal is well-known for organizing ETHWaterloo, ETHSanFrancisco, ETHBuenosAires, etc., which have been regarded as the best hackathons in the world. ETHGlobal recently organized a 30-day DeFi virtual hackathon event HackMoney, with hundreds of participants, more than 100 hackers, etc.

You can explore the event via #HackMoney on Twitter, see the full project showcase, and watch the results here. HackFS is the next step in their journey to making an amazing virtual hackathon experience, and we’re excited to see this amazing team bring their magic to the Filecoin and IPFS communities.

Host Filecoin Ignite - Thoughts and the Future

We initially conceived of Ignite as a hackathon event. However, as we discussed the possibilities with friends, we realized we needed to think bigger. The community around Filecoin, IPFS, and the broader web3 is large, and there are many different subgroups for Filecoin alone. Miners, developers, clients, enterprises, researchers, and token holders are all interested in getting into many different areas, and Filecoin and IPFS have many intersections with other projects, networks, and communities. Many people around the globe would like to tailor events to their region, language, and time zone, and there are many talented groups in the community who want to create their own events.

So, recognizing all this potential, we decided to decentralize Ignite: we turned it into a series of events so that groups could gather and form events that matched their interests. We currently have 6 major events, and we think there will be more to come; we also hope that many smaller meetups and communities might gravitate toward each other and get to know each other through this series.

If you’ve wanted to host an event centered around or featuring Filecoin or IPFS – now’s the time! We’re gathering community members through common channels and providing some support.

We can't wait to get started on HackFS and the Space Race! We look forward to everything you will build.
