Distributed Selection: Two Cost-Effectiveness Indicators for Filecoin Miners

Filecoin mining machines have two cost-effectiveness indicators. The first is the storage index (yuan/T), that is, how much is the price of each terabyte of disk. The second is the computing power index (Gb/h/w), that is, how many GB of data can be stored per hour for every 10,000 yuan of the mining machine purchased. The storage index and the computing power index are a pair of contradictory indicators and are somewhat confusing. Usually when the computing power index is good, the storage index is relatively poor. Therefore, mining machine manufacturers generally only publish one of the indicators of the mining machine.

First, let's talk about the computing power index. If customers add node machines, the computing power index can be enhanced, but this will also weaken the storage index. The storage index mainly comes from the hard disk slots on the mining machine and the size of each slot. In fact, when miners start mining, it is not necessary to fill all the slots with the largest 12T disk, because the mining machine can't store so much. After calculation, many large-capacity mining machines cannot fill the disk for more than half a year. However, in order to pursue "good-looking" data, mining machine companies generally fill the slots of mining machines before selling them, which causes confusion.

In addition, the computing power index and storage index of the mining machine are also related to the size of the mining machine . The larger the size of the mining machine, the more the packaged computing unit and storage unit are used, and the higher the total price. The cost performance of large-sized mining machines is often higher than that of small-sized mining machines, which means that the computing power index and storage index of large mining machines perform better. But the price of large mining machines is also more expensive, which involves the cost performance and price threshold of mining machines: the price threshold of mining machines with high cost performance is also higher, which is not within the reach of retail investors . Therefore, when miners buy mining machines, they need to combine the storage index and computing power index dialectically. Looking at the relative values of the computing power index and the storage index, we can see the tuning preference of the mining machine manufacturer (whether it is biased towards storage or computing power). Looking at the absolute values of the computing power index and the storage index can also show the optimization level of the mining machine company's software and the supply chain capabilities of the hardware.
