Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin tweeted this morning that eth2 is already parallel because sharding is a form of parallelization. But I think the real question is: do the benefits of sharding and intra-shard parallelization stack? Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding "no". Reasons: 1. Not all nodes will run just one shard; some nodes will want to run multiple shards (e.g. validators cost at least 64+ ETH). 2. For the validator use case, the limit is not only the time to verify a block, but also the raw cost of verification. 3. For the regular client use case, we want to make running a sharded validation node not only feasible, but also not too cumbersome. Your laptop is not only running an eth node, it is also running a bunch of other things. |
