Official Blog | What does the Filecoin Mainnet Participation Guide say?

This article was originally written by IPFS Force Zone

In less than 24 hours, Filecoin mainnet is finally online after three years. As always, the official releases key blogs before major updates to help miners smoothly transition to the mainnet.

This article will organize the key information of this blog for you.

Current Network

The network scale exceeds any previous distributed storage project . From SR1 to SR2, miners have stored a huge amount of data for the Filecoin network. As of the 14th, the network scale has reached 530PiB, equivalent to more than 10 billion Youtube videos!

The network has frequent major updates, with significant improvements in stability, efficiency, and flexibility. Since the end of SR1, a total of 8 large-scale updates have been completed, including Lotus 0.8.0 (reducing WindowPost failure costs), Lotus 0.9.0 (easier and clean updates of Filecoin core actors logic), and Lotus 0.10.0 (hot fix for state interrupts).

Orbital Burn is about to end, but Slingshot is still going on. Two days ago, the official announced that due to Slingshot's enthusiasm for participation, the competition was extended for another week, and some targeted auxiliary measures were also released.

Orbital Burn Rewards Released

  • All committed sectors in SR1 and SR2 are 100% migrated to the mainnet;

  • The existing sector pledge will be migrated to the main network at the same time, and will be rewarded to miners after the transaction is completed (540 days after the package by default);

  • Block rewards are still released linearly every 180 days. If FIP-0004 is approved, miners can immediately receive 25% of the rewards as an emergency measure when they are in arrears.

  • Miners participating in Slingshot will receive payments for providing storage and retrieval transactions to clients.

Tap and Reimbursement

Faucet changes. The current faucet has cancelled the automatic fault compensation service and the commitment compensation service (PCR bot), which means that after the mainnet is launched, miners need to provide their own staking funds and be fully responsible for the relevant information in their own nodes, such as available balance, control rights, and miner balance.

Account reimbursement. The official will replenish the accounts of all miners with negative balances, turning their net balances from negative to 0, to ensure that all miners have no debt when entering the main network.

Bonus distribution: The official distributed a one-time bonus of 100 FIL to reward miners who have been actively participating in SR2 in the past week.

Slingshot Faucet: For the ongoing Slingshot competition, the official will continue to run some small faucets for participating miners, such as PublishDeals and WindowPoSt reimbursement robots.

Liftoff FAQ

Q: Mainnet launch time

A: Epoch 148,888 officially begins (around 22:45 Beijing time)

Q: If I participated in the space race before, will my settings change when I go to the mainnet?

A: After the Lotus 0.9.0 update, the miner nodes have been changed to the f0xxxx address of the main network, so the account and address remain unchanged.

Q: From the perspective of operational security, what do I need to do before the mainnet goes live?

A: Starting from lotus 0.9.0, there is a new CLI for managing the owner address of your miner. The wallet associated with the owner address is designed to be an offline cold wallet, because it should not be used frequently, and it is essential to protect the miner's funds. In a production environment, we strongly recommend using separate owner and worker addresses.

Q: How can I help my miner nodes remain stable throughout this transition?

A: We recommend that all miners set up a separate control address to submit window PoSt to the chain to avoid critical, time-sensitive messages being stuck in the mpool. To mitigate Gas-related issues, it is also important to adjust the fee cap set.

Q: What happens if I stop running my mining machine during the mainnet?

A: If you shut down your miner and stop actively validating storage and transactions submitted to the network, your miner will lose hashrate on the first missing proof and be fined for missing proof windows approximately 24 hours later. The more proof periods you miss, the more you are fined. If you do not reclaim your fines and storage transactions within 14 days, your miner's hashrate will be permanently removed from the network and all outstanding rewards will be consumed.

Q: If the test network transitions to the main network, will there be a new test network?

A: We plan to run many testnets with different configurations. The Calibration network has now been set up as the new long-running testnet, which we plan to use for testing new releases and testing state upgrades before doing them in mainnet. It has the same parameters as mainnet, but supports 512 MiB sectors for faster testing. We encourage everyone to test there first, especially before doing major upgrades!
