Slingshot is a community competition for storage clients and developers that rewards storing real, valuable, and usable data on the Filecoin network. The first phase of the Slingshot competition took four weeks. During this time, the Filecoin storage client and developer community passed several important milestones, including: https://filecoin.io/blog/slingshot-phase-1-recap/ Slingshot Phase 2 Introduction Slingshot Phase 2 is a community competition that rewards people for storing valuable data on the Filecoin network. In phase two, we’re looking for teams that are passionate about preserving public, open-access datasets on the Filecoin network . Slingshot has the following goals: · Preserve humanity’s most important datasets on the Filecoin network. Filecoin’s mission has always been to serve as the foundation for humanity’s information. We are excited to work with teams motivated by the same mission to make this vision a reality through Slingshot! This includes storage for telemetry and imaging datasets, historical archives, creative public licensed media and entertainment datasets, scientific research papers, and more! We currently plan to continue this competition until we reach 10PiB of valuable data stored on the network. · Make these important datasets accessible and explorable by anyone in the world . Storing important datasets on the Filecoin network is a critical step, but we also want people around the world to be able to access this data, explore it, and potentially use it for their own projects! All participants must store data in such a way that others can reuse it, and must provide public-facing documentation that shows exactly how the stored data can be used. We provide more specific documentation steps in the rules below. Enhance the Filecoin storage client and developer experience. When you participate in this competition, you will discover ways to improve the overall Filecoin storage client and developer experience. Your feedback is valuable, and we are excited to work with you to improve the Filecoin product experience! · Have fun and build our community of developers and customers! In the coming months, we'll have many opportunities for community members to connect, showcase their projects, and share insights with each other. If you have an idea for a meetup or event, please let us know by filing an issue in the Slingshot repo! How to participate in Slingshot Phase 2 In this competition, participants earn rewards by depositing datasets (i.e., public datasets approved for deposit in this competition) in a well-documented, thoughtful, and reusable manner. Slingshot Phase 2 is completely different from Slingshot Phase 1. If you will be participating in Phase 2, please read this section carefully! To participate in Slingshot Phase 2, you must store one of the datasets listed in the Slingshot GitHub repository. Once you have chosen your dataset and determined your plans for storing this data, you can register to participate in the competition on the Slingshot website: https://slingshot.filecoin.io. Then, continue to store valuable data to earn more rewards. To receive a prize in this contest, you must follow the contest rules: Your project must store approved datasets in Filecoin . If you would like to store a dataset not on this list, please submit a request to the filecoin-project/slingshot GitHub repo . Encrypted data will not be counted towards rewards. No single node can store more than 30% of the data . This means that your project must use more than 4 nodes to store data, but your data cannot be overly concentrated in any single node. You cannot use your own nodes to store any data, so the data stored in your mining machine will not be counted in the final reward and may even be disqualified. You are allowed to store 10 copies of the same data fragment on the network. If you exceed 10, the excess will not be counted in the final reward and may even be disqualified. Every piece of data you store to the Filecoin network must be retrievable by others . This means you must carefully consider how to store your dataset so that others can retrieve it. We will score projects based on the reusability and retrievability of Filecoin data and adjust rewards for teams that cannot obtain retrievable data. To be eligible for rewards, you will need to submit and publish your data processing and retrieval documentation through your account on the Slingshot website . We will also judge the quality of your documentation as part of the final review process. The documentation must include: o Which dataset you are using for storage, and a link to that dataset o Detailed steps on how you process your dataset and store it on the Filecoin network o Links to any tools you use for preprocessing o Specific steps for any other person to retrieve, view, or use the stored data · To be eligible for rewards, you must submit a list of your successful transactions on the Filecoin network. You can upload this list as a CSV to your account on the Slingshot website. Please submit this list as a text-based CSV including the 8 columns listed below, using the same names and order. Incomplete or incorrect lists may result in disqualification, so make sure to start preparing these lists as soon as possible. Other participants in the Slingshot Phase 2 competition will also be able to use these lists to build hacks, so the transaction lists must be available to others. o deal_id : This is an integer that uniquely identifies a deal on the Filecoin network. You can only have one deal ID in a row in the list you submit. The deal ID must be one that can be found on-chain (via lotus state get-deal o miner_id : The node id (in f0xxxx format) where this specific transaction is stored. o payload_cid : The CID of the root of the DAG, representing the file or directory included in the transaction. If you are using lotus, this is the CID you give to the lotus client deal. o filename : A human-readable filename for the generated content (can have any appropriate file extension) o file_format : The data format (mime type or extension) in which the file receiver interprets the data. o deal_size_in_bytes : The deal size in bytes. o date : The time stamp of the transaction in the following format (YYYY-MM-dd HH:mm) o curated_dataset : your stored dataset (in a table) If you have any questions during the game, please look for: Slingshot website: https://slingshot.filecoin.io This website is the source of truth for the entire Filecoin competition. It includes the latest rules, competition leaderboards, major events, and more. Slingshot repo: https://github.com/filecoin-project/slingshot This repo contains important resources for the competition, such as datasets you can choose to store for the competition. You can create a new Slingshot discussion to ask any questions about the program. Slack: If you haven’t already, join the Filecoin project Slack workspace and these channels: o #slingshot-announcements – Browse the main announcements about the Slingshot program o #slingshot – for debugging help and community conversation award We are excited to announce that Slingshot Phase 2 will distribute at least 500,000 FIL as rewards ! This is in addition to the 50,000 FIL distributed in Slingshot Phase 1. Storage Rewards The Slingshot prize pool is both competitive and collaborative. The more data a Slingshot participant stores, the higher the prize pool you will unlock!
The amount of valid data may be different from the total data you have stored after accounting for factors such as too many redundant copies, data that cannot be retrieved, data sets that do not match your organization's list of data sets, poor documentation (if you have a large amount of data that cannot be retrieved ) , etc. Some teams may be disqualified for not following the rules, so please follow the rules! Booster Rewards In addition, we will provide Booster rewards in Phase 2 ! If you follow the rules and store more than 50GiB of new data during the reward window, you will receive a Booster reward of 10FIL. Other rewards will become available over time! Note: All rewards will be released linearly over six months. In addition, although we do not expect this to happen, if Protocol Labs or the Filecoin Foundation determines in their sole discretion that legal or regulatory issues prevent the delivery of any portion of the reward, then the reward may be restructured, postponed, or canceled. Acknowledgements We’re excited to continue the Slingshot competition with familiar contestants and new faces from Phase 1! Your efforts will greatly contribute to the continued growth of real-world data on humanity’s largest decentralized storage network. Thank you to the Filecoin storage clients, developers, and mining community. Let’s move forward towards Slingshot Phase 2. |
