Malaysia used a steamroller to flatten the confiscated Bitcoin mining machines, and more than 1,000 mining machines were destroyed

More than 1,000 Bitcoin mining machines were seized and destroyed in Malaysia after they were illegally mining cryptocurrencies using stolen electricity. The machines, worth about $1.26 million, were flattened by a steamroller in the Malaysian city of Miri, and eight people have been arrested so far.
Malaysian authorities have used steam rollers to destroy 1,069 bitcoin mining machines that were confiscated between February and April, local media reported Friday.
The miners were seized in a joint operation by police and Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) in Miri, a Malaysian city on the northwest coast of Borneo island. They are estimated to be worth 5.3 million Malaysian ringgit ($1.26 million). All the seizures, which have been resolved in court, were processed at the Miri district police headquarters on Friday.
Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said eight other people were arrested for involvement in illegal mining activities. He said in a statement:
“A total of six persons were charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code for stealing electricity and were liable to a fine of up to RM8,000 and a jail term of up to eight months.”
Authorities said the miners used electricity stolen from SEB's power lines to mine Bitcoin.
According to the police chief, SEB lost 8.4 million Malaysian ringgit due to electricity theft during its Bitcoin mining activities. He further elaborated:
“Electricity theft from Bitcoin mining activities has resulted in frequent power outages, and in 2021, three homes were razed to the ground due to illegal power supply connections.”
Local news outlet Dayakdaily published a video on Friday showing the destruction of seized bitcoin mining machines.
