Amazon Cloud Services Outage: Coinbase, dYdX, and More Affected

On December 7, Eastern Time, Amazon's cloud service suffered a large-scale failure, causing some related websites and services to be paralyzed.

A notice on the status page of Amazon Web Services (AWS) said that some APIs and AWS Management Console were experiencing problems, which affected AWS's main US-East-1 region hosted in Northern Virginia, so not all users were experiencing outages. The notice stated, "We are experiencing API and console issues in the US-EAST-1 region. The root cause has been identified and we are actively working to restore."

Due to this incident, dYdX stopped trading for several hours.

dYdX said that currently, dYdX has set orders to post-only mode. Orders sent before the outage were either canceled immediately or completed. However, we are still unable to display the results of the processing (including whether the order has been completed). dYdX is currently considering migrating some key services from ECS to EC2.

Other services affected by the outage include cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and stock and cryptocurrency trading platform Robinhood.

As the world's largest cloud infrastructure provider, AWS controls 32% of the global market as of the third quarter of 2021. In comparison, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud control 21% and 8% of the market share, respectively.

It should be noted that this is not the first time AWS has experienced an outage.

On February 19 this year, AWS outage affected trading, withdrawal and deposit services of multiple cryptocurrency exchanges including Huobi, Binance, and KuCoin.

On November 25, 2020, a long-term outage occurred in the Northern Virginia data center, causing some service interruptions, and Coinbase was one of the applications affected.
